 AsiaEDU News Flash

Education Forum for Asia is an NGO that, since its origin in 2003, has been devoted to building bridges of communication in order to improve education throughout Asia and beyond. EFA is engaged in granting many scholarships to students throughout Asia each year, connecting different education groups in order to facilitate mutually beneficial exchanges, and increasing dialogue among many high level groups in order to assist in the development of education. Events and Activities

                                         Education for All Meeting Held

 On February 23rd- 25th a High Level meeting to discuss Education for All was held in Addis  Ababa (Ethiopia) to face the current problem of a post financial crisis education system where millions and millions of children in impoverished nations are not being given an education. Such topics as the need for more finances to build schools and hire teachers, the gender inequality issues facing adolescent girls, and technical and political support required to meet the Millennium Development Goals.                                           Job Fair in Dalian 

  A fair kicked off on March 6th to show Chinese graduates what type of jobs are out there waiting for them. Over 13,000 jobs from 475 enterprises were up for grabs. To view some of the pictures and read more, click here. 

 

                                          2010 Education Expo

 The 2010 Education Expo is set to take place in October of this year with the theme ‘Universal Values, Global Dreams’. The event will reach 6 major cities in China, including: Beijing, Dalian, Xi’an, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Kunming. For more details about this event, click here.

                                         Wen Jiabao Delivers Speech on Education Reform

“A country cannot become strong or prosperous if it does not make education universal and improve its quality.” Wen Jiabao remarked on March 5th. He spoke of many changes the Chinese Government is implementing for continued development of the education system. For more information, click here.

 

                                          Tibet to Raise Average Schooling to 7 Years

Tibet has new education development goals to raise the average up to 7 years this year, an overall increase of 0.7 years.  Although it’s still less than the national average, it is a sign of increasing prosperity in the region. For more information, click here

 

                                          Migrant Workers’ Children School-less

Over the Chinese New Year, several private schools, providing education to migrant worker’s children were closed down to make room for more expansion of the city. For more information, click here.

                                        
                                         
                                           Course on Sex Education Being Taught for the First Time
Chengdu University has introduced a new course on sex education for its students. The course is being taught by Professor Hu Zhen and is becoming exceedingly popular as Chinese youth begin seeking mates and looking for answers to some more ‘embarrassing’ questions. Penguin Publishing is trying to meet the rising demand for Chinese literature as the rest of the world becomes more and more fascinated by China and the Chinese people.                                          Central American Nations Banding Together for Haiti

After half of the schools and educational institutions of Haiti were destroyed during the January 12th earthquake, Haiti is receiving help from the members of GRULAC (Grupo de Estados Miembros de América Latina y El Caribe - Group of Member States of Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as Japanese Funds in Trust, and the Brazilian Government.                                          Large Protests to Oppose Education Cuts, Tuition Hikes

On March 5th, thousands went on strike and protested the recent education cuts and tuition increases in the United States. Several arrests were made throughout the country at different locations. For more information, click here.
