Distance education, as a new way of teaching, provides a band-new solution to the difficulties caused by geographical confinement. Rural education lags much behind the average situation of the national education, yet China’s education goals will have no way to be achieved if compulsory education plan cannot be carried out down to the ground in rural areas. The previous headache to China’s educators and decision makers is miraculously cured by using the distance technologies in education, by which children, no matter where they are located, are able to share the same excellent education resources. The paper first talks about the background and main tasks of distance education project. Its goal is to initially create an information-based environment for compulsory education in rural areas, so that the best resources will be shared, the backward situation of rural education be reversed, the quality of education be improved, profit be made and the desperate need of rural people to get education would also be satisfied. At the same time, local primary and secondary schools accessible to distance education should be taken as hubs spreading information, science and cultures and as service centers for local people to learn knowledge. Then the paper comes to the characteristics of the project. First, the project is carried out with low cost and high speed, covering massive areas as targeted. Second, all patches of areas are naturally linked together by the project, showing the purposes of sharing best resources by all, improving rural education quality, winning more benefits and building a platform for sharing information. To bring more benefits when implementing this project, we put much focus on staff training, in a hope to equip our teachers with all that require of them to teach well. Resources construction is another priority of our agenda, the ultimate performance of which is pretty much decided by the abundance and quality of the due education resources. Besides, we are also working on more generalized employment of teaching DVDs, which gives better effect of education.
